Greetings, friends! And happy Monday!

I just loved reading all of the comments that you left on my iPad cover tutorial. It never gets old to read about your ideas and inspiration.

You all seemed excited about the project, which got me even more excited about the project... so, I decided to give away THREE sets of materials.

The Random Number Generator, located at random.org, selected the following lovely ladies to receive a sweet little package of oilcloth:

Tina Howell
Kymmie M.
Beth Wulff

Congrats! I'm contacting each of you now via e-mail.

Happy sewing!

That's right! I'm sending a copy of Nicholas Spark's "The Lucky One" to two lucky friends!

The random number generator selected comments #1 and #4 from my last post. Congratulations, Cindie and Cort! I'm e-mailing you both right now.

Enjoy the reads and be sure to catch the movie. It's in theaters now!
Ladies, Mr. Nicholas Sparks has it figured out - exactly what we want out of a love story. And his latest movie release, The Lucky One, is no exception.

{Hello! When did Zac Efron become appropriately drool worthy?!}

As a member of HouseParty.com, I signed up to host one of the 1,000 "The Lucky One" parties offered to promote the movie and was selected! Yippee!!

Who doesn't love a big box of F.R.E.E. showing up on their doorstep?

If you're unfamiliar with HouseParty.com, it is a free online community for brands to connect products to customers. A marketer's dream, really. Top companies, such as Godiva, Keurig, and Grand Central Publishing (obviously), select a members to send their products to. As a party host, you agree to plan a gathering of your friends, promote the product with the tools provided, and pass out all of the free swag!

Girl time and freebies - what could be better?

So, here's what my party pack contained:

For this event, HouseParty encouraged a potluck dinner. I came up with my own interpretation and planned a salad luncheon during the middle of the workday. It was PERFECT!

We all gathered for lunch and everyone brought a salad to share - from chicken to fruit to quinoa. It was such a yummy lunch!

As everyone gathered, I conducted a creative photo shoot with their good luck charms.

(She's an amazing athlete!)

As we finished eating, we watched the extended movie preview and played a little Nicholas Spark's trivia game afterward. It was a very competitive match, but Megan reigned victorious and walked away with an awesome movie t-shirt.

Kellie was "the lucky one" selected for my door prize - a movie poster (that now hangs on the wall directly across from her desk. Nice placement, Kellie!).

Everyone left with a goodie bag containing a movie edition novel of "The Lucky One" and a bookmark.

All in all a tremendous success for my first HouseParty! We all had an amazing time together and left with plans to gather more often for little lunch parties.

**big smile**

Hey! I have one goodie bag left over! I'd love to send it your way! Leave me a comment below and I'll pick a winner at random on Friday, April 20.

Tell me about a HouseParty that you've hosted. Not a member? You should definitely sign up at HouseParty.com and invite me to your next event.

**wink**

Graphic design is a major part of my professional life. However, in marketing, you're usually tied to a certain set of objectives - branding, graphics standards, a particular look and feel.

So, the idea of subway art has always fascinated me. It seems so freeing...

{You mean, I can use any words that I want, any font that I like, in any pattern that I wish? Shut the front door! That's awesome.}

So, I decided to experiment with a few different techniques to create an art piece for Ryder's room. I was also eager to put my sports letters to good use and this seemed like a perfect opportunity.

For this project, I used:

  • 1 18"x24" canvas
  • Scrap fabric (a piece large enough to cover the canvas and a smaller piece to run through my printer)
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Acrylic paint
  • Sports Letter Appliques
  • Mod Podge
  • Fabric glue

I started by laying out my design (to scale) in Adobe InDesign.

{Feel free to download for your own use.}

I found this vintage baseball graphic at TheGraphicsFairy.com.

I covered my canvas with fabric, adhering with Mod Podge.

Next, I began work on a set of stencils. I converted my artwork into a format that I could trace with my Silhouette software. I exported my file from InDesign as a JPEG.

I traced the artwork, which meant working with a couple of different Silhouette studio files. Because my layout is so large, I had to break down my design into pieces that could be cut with my Silhouette.

{If you would like these .studio files, I'm happy to share! Just e-mail me at rachelhgarza{at}gmail{dot}com.}

I cut the stencils out of clear Contact Paper (trimmed to a size that would run through my machine) and laid them out on my fabric-covered canvas and sponged over the letters with acrylic paint. I wanted the letters to look worn and rough so I used a minimum amount of paint on my sponge.

I've been looking for a reason to try printing on fabric so I decided to make a patch out of a different ticking fabric. I ironed my fabric onto Craft Bond, trimmed to size, and had no trouble running the piece though my inkjet printer.

I used a decorative stitch, reminiscent of a baseball's stitching, to frame around the image and trimmed the excess fabric away. I adhered my "patch" with fabric glue.

If I had it to do over again, I would have used a different fabric. In my mind, these patterns should line up perfectly when layered on top of one another... but this is real life...

I left space in my layout to incorporate a few sports letters. Once I finished painting, I adhered the letters with fabric glue.

Here's the end result.

It's not a terrible first attempt. I'm definitely going to use it in the room. However, I'm not wild about the mix of vintage lettering with more modern appliques.

It was a great learning experience and I'm inspired to do more! I have a few ideas for more subway art for the boys' playroom. So... who knows what I'll have to share in the coming weeks...

Hey! I have an extra baseball fabric print that I made, but didn't use. If you would like it for your own project, leave a comment below. I'll select someone at random next Friday to send it to.
Yep... I've been takin' care of business all weekend long! I'm trying to clear some items off of my "to do" list so that they won't be hanging over my head during the holidays.

The great news {for me, anyway} is that I've got some time off this week and have several creative projects to tackle! So, I'll be posting throughout the week, instead of waiting for the weekend.

Whoo-hoo!

Moving on to more fun business... look what came in over the weekend!!

My 7-year-old was so excited to see his handiwork on display in the magazine. This has been such an amazing experience.

Next on the agenda...

I really, really enjoyed reading all of your suggestions for what I should do with my sports letters. You ladies are such an inspiration!

I smiled, ooh and ahh'd, and slapped my head a few times, thinking "That's genius! Why didn't I think of that?"

{I actually have a board dedicated to these moments on Pinterest.}

The random number generator {yes, I've moved on from scrap paper in a bucket} selected Katie to receive a little bundle of these appliques for her own project. Congratulations, Katie!!

I look forward to sharing with you what I finally decided to do with the letters. Please check in with me again to find out if I'm successful.

{fingers crossed}

And finally, two minor announcements...

You may now find Always a Project at always-a-project.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/alwaysaproject! {I know, I know... I'm late to the party!}

My interaction with each of you is what makes this effort so special. I hope that Facebook will help us to exchange ideas even more often. So, if you log on, please "Like" my page.

Happy Monday! I look forward to touching base with you again throughout this holiday week!

I'm especially excited about this thrifty find that I picked up at the Salvation Army last month. They had a huge bin of new sports letter appliques and they were selling them 20 for $1! Can you believe that?!

I was reminded about my fun purchase thanks to Jodi Kahn's Homecoming Onesie post from earlier this week. Such a perfect project for this time of year!

But, I don't know what to do with my letters...

There are the usual suspects - t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. But, I want to do something really fun.

It's been a while since I've done a giveaway so you are due! Leave me some comments with ideas about what you might do with these appliques. I'll pick someone at random on Sunday, November 20, to receive 5 of these pieces for your own project.

I can't wait to hear about what you have in mind!!
